History

The Old English word "fot" is where the word "foot" (meaning "terminal part of the leg of a vertebrate animal") came from.

Historically, the "foot" was a part of many regional systems of units, such as the Greek, Roman, Chinese, French, and English systems. The first recorded standard foot measure comes from Sumer, where a definition is given in a statue of Gudea of Lagash from around 2575 BC.

The Yard is a widely used unit of length in both the British imperial and US customary systems of measurements. It equals 3 feet or 36 inches. On the other hand, a distance of 1760 yards is equal to 1 mile. 

For yard to meter conversion, one yard is equivalent to 0.9144 meters. There are 0.0109 yards in a centimeter. In the other direction, a yard is equivalent to 91.44 centimeters. So for yard to cm conversion, divide yard measure by 91.44..

History

The yard measure's origins are not uncertain. The term “yard” was first used in the 12th century. It was defined by English King Henry I as the distance between his nose and the thumb of his extended arm.

After many other definitions, in 1855, the Weights and Measures Act officially recognized a new standard based on Baily's metal No. 4. From 1845 and 1855, 40 standards of yard were formed, one of them was the imperial standard.

After so many changes, in 1959, the yard that is now known as the international yard was defined as 0.9144 meters. The imperial standard in 1855 was renamed as the United Kingdom Primary Standard Yard.

Use

Yard line in American football is one great example of where yard is used. It is mostly used for field length measurements and other length measurements. In many parts of the world yard is used to measure clothing items.
