100 grams weight is very common, especially in food or grocery items. It is also used for calorie measurements. We usually find food calories per 100 grams.

This article shares a list of common items around us that weigh 100 grams. So, you can easily guess how much 100 grams of weight will be like. You can even use these weights to calibrate a scale. Let’s first see what 100 grams means in terms of other measuring units.

How much is 100grams?

100 grams means one-tenth of a kilogram. It is equivalent to 0.22 pounds and 3.53 ounces.

100 gms = 0.22 pounds = 3.53 ounces

1. A Pocket Knife

We are all quite familiar with knives, but very few know how much a knife weighs. The weight of a knife can be anything from 28.35 to 453 grams on average, depending on the type of knife.

Among the regular knives, pocket knives are tiny, with one or two blades that can be folded into the handle. However, pocket knives come in various sizes and shapes, so the weights vary. The average weight of a pocket knife is approximately 99.22 grams with a 3 inches blade and a 4-inch plastic or synthetic handle. This means it weighs almost 100 grams.

The weight will also vary depending on the material of the blade or handle. For example, an aluminum handle is heavier than a synthetic handle.

2. A Newborn Kitten

Newborn kittens are tiny in size. You can take a newborn kitten as an example of 100 grams because a healthy newborn kitten is about 3.5 ounces, or nearly 100 grams, in weight.

Kittens are born with closed eyes and folded ears. They usually weigh between 80 to 100 grams. Around three days, their umbilical cord gets stumped. A kitten doubles its weight by the end of the first week!

You can also take other baby animals for hundred grams weight reference. For example, a small newborn puppy like a Chihuahua of 3 to 4 inches will have an average weight of just 2½ to 5½ ounces.

3. Coins

A single US nickel weighs exactly 5 grams. So, taking 20 nickels will make exactly 100 grams of weight.

You can also use twenty pence (20) coins. It has the same weight as a nickel, e.g., 5g each. These can be easily used for 100 grams weight measurements instead of any weight bar, as the weights of these coins are fixed.

4. One Box of Paper Clips

Let’s explore some household items now. Household items typically have a more definite weight since they’re not growing and changing daily. For example, a box of paper clips.

A full box of paper clips contains 100 paperclips. And, regular-size paperclips weigh 1 gram each. So in total, the weight of the box will be a little over 100 grams, adding weight of the box. But that is going to be nominal for a paper box.

Besides this, jumbo-sized and small clips are also available. But you typically find regular-sized paperclips in school or workplace supplies. A simple box like this could serve as an effective tool for weight measurement.

5. All-Purpose Glue

All-purpose glues are another common item we frequently use. Glues generally come in different sizes of packs and containers. Among all the sizes, you can find many 100 grams packs in any stationary or online shop.

For example, Pritt all-purpose or Fevicol craft glue is the most commonly used. These are available in different packs, including 100 grams packs. Every home has these, especially in art and craft kits. However, the packaging weight adds to the 100gms of glue, making the total weight a little over hundred grams.

6. A Kiwifruit/Avocado

Since fruits are easily available around us, they can be a suitable weight reference. These common fruits can help you in estimating 100 grams if other items are unavailable. For example, a large kiwifruit weighs approximately 100-120 grams. So you can use kiwi to use as a 100-grams weight reference.

A similar example can be an avocado. If you buy avocados from a general store, they are often sold individually and can range in size. Small sized avocados (size 84) weigh around 100 grams.

7. A Banana

Apart from kiwi or avocado, you can also take a banana as an example. Though bananas also come in different sizes–small, medium, and large. And there are many different kinds available too. So which ones can be used as a reference to 100gm weight? A medium-sized banana, about 7 inches in length, will weigh around 120 grams. This is a little over 100 grams.

It is the most widely consumed and easily obtainable fruit. Thus, you can take this up as an example to estimate the weight of 100 grams.

8. Two Medium Size Eggs

Eggs are another popular food item. An average medium-sized chicken egg is very close to 50 grams in weight. So, 2 eggs will bring your total close to 100 grams.

You can also check which size of carton you generally buy. If it is a 21oz carton of a dozen eggs, the eggs will be almost 50 grams each. So, in that case, you need 2 eggs to get 100 grams. Then again, a carton of 42oz of a dozen eggs would have eggs with 100 grams weight each. So holding one of these eggs will give you the idea of 100 grams.

I know it seems like a typical mathematics problem now! But all you need is just two medium-sized eggs. That’s it! It’ll be better if you take boiled eggs for your estimation. Doing it with raw eggs can be a mess if not handled properly!

9. Sugar or Salt

Aside from those discrete items, sugar or salt can be measured to make up a hundred grams. And they are the most common grocery items, so you don’t need to go far.

For example, 1/2 cup (U.S. cups) of powdered brown sugar (light) weighs very close to a hundred grams, equivalent to 3.5 ounces. The same thing goes for salt.

Too many food items? Okay. Let’s go for a non-food item!

10. Apple Magic Mouse

Have you ever tried holding your computer mouse and guessing its weight? It’s pretty lightweight. But how much does it weigh? A computer mouse weighs 100 grams on average. This is considered as the ideal weight. However, the weight of wired and wireless ones differs.

Mouse weight range varies from 58g to 183g (heaviest). The relatively lighter weight mouse is popular for regular use, while gamers or graphics designers prefer the heavier one. We are taking the apple mouse as an example. Because all apple mouse are almost 100 grams (0.22 pounds). These are also rechargeable and wireless.

Conclusion

The above examples are just a few items weighing 100 grams. There are many more things of such weight you can find around you. With these items, you can easily estimate what a 100-gram weight feels like. You may find these 10 ounces objects or 10 grams objects or 10 kg reference items interesting as well.
